East River Path (aka East River Bikeway and Esplanade)
Manhattan
Imagine if you could walk or bike all the way along the East River from 125h Street to the Battery on a smooth, lovely, continuous path. Really, you have to imagine it. Though the part of the path north of Carl Schurz Park is fabulous, the rest of the East River Path is unfabulous. Thankfully there's the river and the lights of the city to regard (though we recommend looking down every so often for broken concrete, bricks, rocks, fish hooks, cardboard houses). And guess who is running (the exercise kind) here? People of all ages, skewing, yes, Appropriate (though, to be fair, in this case we're not sure why).
