We continually have readers asking us for advice on where to have a birthday party. We're not in the business of party-planning but we can offer some suggestions, which we're doing today in honor of Sara's brother's upcoming 35th birthday. Happy. But first, what are 30-somethings seeking in a venue?
- An absence of 20-somethings
- An absence of clamor (aka the ability to converse at semi-regular volume)
- A presence of space (in the form of floor or seating)
- A presence of quality drinks (be they beer or cocktails)
- A presence of, or proximity to, food
Though we usually are hard pushers of hotel and restaurant bars, for the purpose of parties, or any groups larger than 3-4, we recommend you go elsewhere.
We are Huge fans of 2A (25 Ave. A, 2nd St., Manhattan). You can take over the upstairs space with its fantastic corner windows without feeling completely cut off from the rest of the bar and the world (beware of windowless private rooms).
At Dive 75 (101 W. 75th St., Columbus Ave., Manhattan) you can take over half the space and still feel part of a larger scene and have a view of the street.
We also like 11th Street Bar (510 E. 11th St., Ave. A, Manhattan) because they have a back room that doesn't feel cut-off. But if you're into this sort of place, probably your local will also suit. It's not unlike Bill's Gay Nineties (57 E. 54th St., Madison Ave., Manhattan), frequent AA birthday party site.
And we once upon a time planned a birthday at 169 Bar (169 E. Broadway, Rutgers St., Manhattan) but you need to make sure you are not sharing the space with a dissimilar group (ask and they'll tell you). And this is not a chit-chatty party; this is a dance-y party (like pictured).
Let's round out this little list with Jadis (42 Rivington St., Eldridge St., Manhattan). Here's your glass of wine.
We know more. But this is what we're saying for now. What do you know?
