Continued from Part 5...She’d called me from her home the day before. I remembered seeing the number.
“Hi,” I said when her husband picked up.
“I can’t help her. She punched me. She’s out on her own. Tell me what you want me to do. I want to help her but I can’t.”
“She’s calling me now,” he said, “I’ll call you back.”
I cried for five minutes before calling my brother. He didn’t pick up. I called a friend, a real one. She didn’t answer. I tasted blood. My lip was bleeding, my jaw was already sore, and when I went to the bathroom mirror to check it out, I noticed the cut not far from my eye.
I called the husband.
I called the Friend.
I called my friend. I was hysterical.
“Do you want me to come over?” asked my friend who was nearly an hour away by subway, and very pregnant.
“No, thank you,” I said, choking down tears. “I just need to calm down.”
“You have to ice your face,” she said.
“I’m doing it,” I said, getting a soft cold pack from my freezer, something usually used on my back. “I just can’t believe this.”
“She must have blacked out.”
“I guess.”
“Or passed out.”
“In the two minutes I was in the bathroom? I didn’t take a shower.”
“You never know.”
“I don’t know.”
“And then she woke up and didn’t know where she was and you weren’t there, and then she freaked out.”
“What if that was some dumb guy I brought back here?” I asked. “This was someone I supposedly know.”
“I can come up there if you want.”
“I’m ok. I just need to pass out. I just wish I knew she was ok.”
“That is not your problem.”
“I know. It just stinks because we had such a great night. I thought I’d really reconnected with an old friend. It was so much fun. I just can’t believe I can’t have a normal relationship with anyone.”
“This doesn’t have anything to do with you, and it definitely doesn’t have anything to do with any other relationships.”
“This is someone who’s supposedly my Friend. Does Facebook even know what that means?”
Have “best” and “true” have been added to the word because its meaning has been devalued? A word whose roots are “love” in Greek and Latin now needs adjectives to mean something?
